Dear reader,
Hello and welcome to my website! I wanted to give you a few reasons of why I chose the topic I did before we jump in. I chose the topic of Human Oddities or Circus freaks, based on the show American Horror Story: Freak Show. I enjoyed the show a lot, but it also brought up a big question to me, who is the real monster? In the show, we see the life these freaks live, and how the ‘normal’ people around react to them.
Throughout all of American culture, Human oddities have been perceived as a ‘monsters’ because no one can explain it. But I thought “who is the monster? The freak itself or the ringmaster exploiting these humans to the public?” Because these people don’t feel like monsters at all, to them they are normal. When people stare they feel uncomfortable, they are just as human as the rest of us.
In this project I chose to look into P.T. Barnum specifically because he is one of the biggest names in the circus freak industry, and I believe he really started it all. Barnum exploited these freaks to the community and made them believe they were people they weren’t, that they were more of a monster then a human.
I believe this topic is important because we see unusual things as monsters, we don’t see them as one of us. Barnum really tried to show people that they aren’t like us by creating his circus of curiosities. I believe this is what created people to think that they aren’t human just because they look different.
